Day 10

Today is our 10th day of walking and we have covered 154km. Having done these sums and checked the guide book, we realise that the next stages are going to be longer. We have had it easy! The good news is that tomorrow is a rest day.

Today's highlight was finding a recently restored, water wheel powered flour mill. We nearly walked past it as there were no signs and it was a little off the trail. After we had been there 15min or so, a lady walked over from the farmhouse next door and gave us a guided tour and a demonstration. It has been fuly restored and is fully operational. We even walked out with a bag of flour.

The rest of the walk into Gmund was uneventful but it is beautiful town, first established in 1273 and our accommodation very nice so we are really looking forward to our rest day here tomorrow.  The last photo is of some lederhosen that we thought might fit Jasper and Hugo.

I used to dislike spending much money on accommodation, far better to spend it on food and beer. But as the colour of my hair has changed, so too has my appreciation for air conditioning, good location, views and room to swing the cat. With this in mind we decided to book a nice place to spend the last 4 days of our amazing trip and we have not been disapointed. The apartment, booked though airbnb is fantastic, even better than we had hoped. Great location, in the Monti district, lots of narrow lanes, restaurants, bars, and the best gelateria in Rome immediately below us. It is much bigger than we expected, has a balcony, and cool terrazzo floors. Rome is special. The Colosseum, the Parthenon and the Vatican deserve their place at the head of the bucket list but there is much more to this city. Day 36 Bagnoli Della Rosandra

Left the horses this morning and walked up a steep hill before joining an old railwayline now conveted to a cycle and walking path. The path follows the Italian/Slovenian border for a while and includes several tunnels. Left this path to descend down into the Val Rosandra gorge which we followed into the small town of Bagnoli Della Rosandra. We have now left Slovenia for the last time and will spend our final week or so in Italy. We only have one more day on the Alpe Adria Trail. It seems to have gone very quickly and in some ways tomorrow will be a little sad.

Finished up in Vienna with a good meal and boutique beers from a local pub in a lovely town square. Caught the fast train to Salzburg this morning. It reached speeds of up to 230kmph and got us there in time for an early lunch and stroll around the old centre.  The main plaza was the meeting point for a classic car rally. Thought Will in particular would like some of these photos . More photos and narrative of fortresses, churches and narrow cobbled streets tomorrow.
