Day 12 Up the Nockberg Mountains
Today was one of our most spectacular yet, a long ascent but worth every step. Starting at our lakeside pension at about 600m alt we climbed up and up and up to about 2100m, followed the ridgetop of the Nockberg Mountains, before a short descent to Millstatter Hut at 1800m, our overnight digs.
As the photos show, it wasn't all hard yakka, as there were 2 nice little cafes along the way and the weather was perfect.
There were stunning views most of the way, particularly from along the top of the ridge where we had 360 degree panoramas- the Austrian and main European Alps to the west and the Julian Alps on the Italian/Slovenian/Austrian borders to the east and south.
Our accommodation was basic but the ambience in the hut was realy homely and felt authentically Austrian, the beer was cold and the traditional Austrian meal of various types of dumplings was delicious.
A quiz for the cattle people out there: What breed of cattle is shown in the last photo?
