Day 13 Down the Nockberg Mountains

Today was a tale of two halves.

This morning we set off back up to the top of the Nockberg ridge and followed it until it dropped off at the northern end.  A cold wind buffeted us as we walked the rather exposed ridge but the views were just as good as yesterday. We were also lucky enough to come across several marmot (large, terrestrial alpine squirel) colonies. They behave a bit like meerkats and one or two of the lookouts allowed us to get within about 15m before ducking into their burrows.

Today was the first day we have seen a lot of other walkers on the trail. There were dozens of groups of all ages walking in both directions. It was a Saturday and the weather was fine and they were making the most of it.

At about midday we started a long descent, from 2100m back down to 600m. The first few hours were OK but later in the day the knees and feet in particular began to suffer and by the time we reached our destination, Dollach, at about 4.30, we were worn out, sore and ready for beer, dinner and bed.
