Day 22 Up and over to Slovenia

Today began with a steep climb up to a saddle on a ridge that marked the border between Slovenia and Austria. (Refer to the first photo and note the survey marker which continued up the ridge). We then followed the ridge for several kilometers, sometimes with one foot in Slovenia and one in Austria.

As we steadily climbed, the trees thinned out and the views got better and better. You know the hills are steep and the track narrow when one of your walking poles is constantly swinging in the breeze hundreds of meters off the ground.

We reached the high point at Schwarzkogel, 1842m, at about midday and paused for a rest and a bite to eat. The 360 degree views were stunning, probably the best we have seen. The rugged Julian Alps to the south and east, the Nockberg range, Faaker See and Worther See to the north. Photos 7 - 10.  The 6th photo shows Tony giving Sue a bit a a push up a slope that is steeper than it looks.

The long descent to Kranjska Gora, a ski resort town in far NW Slovenia, took another 5 hours but the track was good, the weather fine and the glorious views continued.

By the time we got into town we were very tired but we knew we had just experienced another brilliant days mountain walking.
