Day 3 and 4
Day 3 was our first tough day, mainly because it started to rain just as we began a stretch described in the guide book as a "relentlessly steep forest path". Three hours later the sun broke through, the forest opened up into alpine meadow and we could see our destination, the mountain hut at Marterle. We were wet, cold and tired and the hut provided only basic accommodation (nowhere to dry our clothes for example) but we had a few beers, a hearty wiener schnitzel and the beds were warm.
The walk to Stall the next day was downhill most of the way and the pension was really good, except for no wifi. The dinner was a 3 course affair that more than made up for the calories we had burnt over the previous two days.
