Day 8

Today we left our pension in Obervellach on the valley floor at about 700m altitude, walked up a steep slope to about 1100m, which is about mid slope, where we spent the next few hours before descending steeply to our next town and guesthouse.

The first photo is yet another small local church. These people like their churches.  The second and third photos are of Falkenstein Castle which is located right alongside the trail. It is now privately owned and not open to the public.

As I may have mentioned before, most of the trail is along walking tracks, 4WD tracks, and local roads through private property with some national park. This afternoon part of the trail went through a hunting reserve. Hunting is a popular pastime in Austria with deer the main target. The second and third last photos show what I think is a bait station, with the hay currently fenced off, and a saltlick which is about 2m off the ground .

The last photo is of our guesthouse for tonight, which turned out to be the best so far. Christian, the owner, chef, gardener etc spoke good English and was a brilliant host. An hour or so before dinner, after providing us with drinks, he went into the garden to pick the salad and veges for dinner. The meal was delicious.

I used to dislike spending much money on accommodation, far better to spend it on food and beer. But as the colour of my hair has changed, so too has my appreciation for air conditioning, good location, views and room to swing the cat. With this in mind we decided to book a nice place to spend the last 4 days of our amazing trip and we have not been disapointed. The apartment, booked though airbnb is fantastic, even better than we had hoped. Great location, in the Monti district, lots of narrow lanes, restaurants, bars, and the best gelateria in Rome immediately below us. It is much bigger than we expected, has a balcony, and cool terrazzo floors. Rome is special. The Colosseum, the Parthenon and the Vatican deserve their place at the head of the bucket list but there is much more to this city. Day 36 Bagnoli Della Rosandra

Left the horses this morning and walked up a steep hill before joining an old railwayline now conveted to a cycle and walking path. The path follows the Italian/Slovenian border for a while and includes several tunnels. Left this path to descend down into the Val Rosandra gorge which we followed into the small town of Bagnoli Della Rosandra. We have now left Slovenia for the last time and will spend our final week or so in Italy. We only have one more day on the Alpe Adria Trail. It seems to have gone very quickly and in some ways tomorrow will be a little sad.

Muggia - Trieste

Spent  Sunday afternoon and Monday morning looking around Muggia before getting the ferry to Trieste, only half an hour away. Sunday night we lashed out to celebrate the end of our walk and went to a nice seafood restaurant on the harbour at Muggia. Annie and I had whole baked fish and Tiramisu and the 4 of us shared a couple of bottles of local wine. Very nice. Trieste is the largest city we have been to since our first days in Vienna. It has lots of very big old buildings and enormous squares, one of which was hosting an Iron Maiden concert tonight (the day we left). Spent Monday afternoon and next morning roaming around. Trieste has a reputation for having the best coffee in Italy and for being like Venice without the crowds and canals. Make of that what you will. This morning, Tuesday, we caught the train to Venice and, after bustling through the crowds, settled in to our accommodation which overlooks a canal. More on Venice next chapter. ...
