Gumnd

Annie and I had a castle and a cathedral all to ourselves this morning. No staff, no visitors, no locked doors. Just wander in, wander about and wander out. No rules, no entrance fees, no graffiti and no evidence of any vandalism occurring over the last 800 years.

Gmund is a small town, with a walled historical centre, that has developed into a centre for the arts. Lots of galleries, including one featuring works from Henri Matisse, lots of sculptures in public spaces.

The 4th photo is of one of the few war memorials we have seen. Note the iron cross on the wall.

Today was a little wet so, other than visiting galleries we had coffee and cake in the morning, pancake (strips) soup for lunch and apple strudel and coffee this afternoon.  Not sure that we will be losing any weight this trip, even after walking 680km.

In 1944 the Porsche factory moved from Stuttgart to Gmund to avoid being bombed by the Allies. They set up the small factory in a sawmill until 1951 when they moved back to Stuttgart. Today there is a museum on the edge of town which we visited.  Very interesting. The wooden frame was used to handmake the body panels.
