Day 28 Cividale Del Friuli
We have been looking forward to Cividale since we began planing this trip and first impressions are that we will not be disappointed.
However, we had to get here first and it was a relatively long walk at 24km. Just as there is a cross on top of every mountain in Austria, there is a church on top of every hill in Italy and today our journey included 2 hills and subsequently 2 churches. The first was Monte San Giovani, a small stone church dating back to the 16th Century. Photos attached. The second was much larger with the grand name of The Santuary of the Blessed Virgin of Castlemonte. The shrine dates back to the 6th Century and it was also used as a Roman military base and was well fortified. Sorry, no good photos.
Towards the end of the day, for the last few kilometres into Cividale, we walked out of the mountains, hills and forests onto flat arable country. For the first time since starting this journey we were now walking through vineyards, crops and pastures on flat ground!
Cividale Del Friuli is a beautifully preserved medieval city, founded by Julius Caesar in 53BC. The bridge into town, the Devil's Bridge, was built in the 15th century and although has been of strategic value for all 600 years, has survived numerous wars and earthquakes. Our guesthouse is in the centre of the old town and we are really looking forward to having a good look around tomorrow.

Looks like some great views.
ReplyDeleteStill dry here. We had some rain last week 19mm in Dunedoo. Nothing else.
Enjoy your walks.
