Day 30 Brda region

Today we followed the Italian/Slovenian border, staying just inside Slovenia, for about 26km before arriving in Smartno.

According to the local blurb, this is the premier wine growing region of Slovenia. Big call, I know, but there sure are a lot of vineyards hereabouts.  The Brda region has been producing wine since the Romans ran the show. For the wine connoisseurs, the main varieties are Rebula, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignonasse. We intend to taste a few shortly.

The country really is beautiful. Green rolling hills, dominated by vineyards but also with forests, crops and orchards of cherrys, apricots, nectrines, pears, apples and plums. Small villages dot the landscape and we seem to walk from one to the next pretty quickly.

We had lunch today in a casino. Three courses, white tablecloths, heavy drapes and roulette wheels.

Smartno is an old walled town on a hill top and our hotel is perfectly located. We have another rest day here tomorrow and I'll tell you more then. The last photo is our approach to Smartno.

Finished up in Vienna with a good meal and boutique beers from a local pub in a lovely town square. Caught the fast train to Salzburg this morning. It reached speeds of up to 230kmph and got us there in time for an early lunch and stroll around the old centre.  The main plaza was the meeting point for a classic car rally. Thought Will in particular would like some of these photos . More photos and narrative of fortresses, churches and narrow cobbled streets tomorrow.

12 more hours and we wil be on our way. We travelled by train and bus today through spectacular scenery and incredible mountains. The afternoon was spent looking around the town, watching motorbikes of all shapes and sizes roll in. We are next to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, a famous and very popular road classed as one of the best roads in the world. Another beautiful church that overlooks a graveyard for mountaineers. We poked our head into the 130 year celebrations for volunteer firefighters complete with oompa band. *make fun in mouth* the slogan for the pub we went to last night

Rome

I used to dislike spending much money on accommodation, far better to spend it on food and beer. But as the colour of my hair has changed, so too has my appreciation for air conditioning, good location, views and room to swing the cat. With this in mind we decided to book a nice place to spend the last 4 days of our amazing trip and we have not been disapointed. The apartment, booked though airbnb is fantastic, even better than we had hoped. Great location, in the Monti district, lots of narrow lanes, restaurants, bars, and the best gelateria in Rome immediately below us. It is much bigger than we expected, has a balcony, and cool terrazzo floors. Rome is special. The Colosseum, the Parthenon and the Vatican deserve their place at the head of the bucket list but there is much more to this city.
